How We Express Ourselves

This week the preschoolers continued their finding out stage of our How We Express Ourselves unit of inquiry.

We read Leo Lionni's A Color of My Own and the preschoolers immediately identified that once the chameleon found another chameleon to be friends with, he was no longer sad. They also spoke about the fact that the constant changing of his skin colour, without being given a choice, made him sad, too. This led to a discussion about how we choose (or don't choose) particular colours in our clothes, our drawings and our personal spaces to express how we feel.

The preschoolers then had the chance to colour their own chameleon, using colours, shapes and patterns to express how they feel. I was evident that they were not only using their imagination but also their creativity to create their chameleons.

The preschoolers explored expressing their creativity through writing poems. Once again, they used their fascinating imagination to create acrostic poems with their names as the title, and the text describing themselves. This was quite a tricky task at first but the preschoolers dug deep to make connections about who they are, and the letters in their names. It was heartwarming to see quite a few preschoolers help each other with ideas. They complimented their poems, with illustrations to match.

The Busy Bees are poets, and they did not even know it!

The learning continues...

In the Busy Bees classroom, the door is always left open for learning to continue once a unit of inquiry has been concluded. The preschoolers show that they are authentic action takers, as they continue to make connections and share their at-home learning experiences with their classmates once we move onto a new unit.

One of the preschoolers shared that she had so many roly-polies in her garden at home, and she kindly brought a few of the bugs for us to marvel at.

Our plant babies are now producing flowers! The action-takers have been responsible caretakers, as they often remind me that we have to water the plants!

Next week, the preschoolers will continue inquiring more different ways that they can express their creativity using their imagination!

Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

Reflections

This week brings to a close our How The World Works unit of inquiry. Over the last eight weeks the preschoolers have inquired into the different changes that living things go through, what causes these changes, and also how to responsibly support and aid these necessary changes.

The preschoolers spent time reflecting on what the new knowledge they have acquired during this inquiry:

They enjoyed being caregivers to their plant babies.

They are proud of the work they put into their assembly. Most of them also simply loved being on stage!

They found exploring different life cycles interesting.

Well done, Busy Bees! You have grown in your thinking skills. You have taken your research abilities to higher levels. You have become even more active communicators.

Before

After

The Busy Bees showed great responsibility and care as they cared for their plant babies throughout this unit. From tiny seeds in soil, to lush green and vibrant plants who could in a few weeks start to grow flower buds. In fact, two of our plant babies are already growing buds and starting to bloom!

How wonderful to see such drastic change happen right in front of our eyes!

The preschoolers were delighted to get the chance to watch the Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 students in their musical show, Porridge! They sat with . Well done to the Upper Primary students and teachers for putting on a wonderful show. The preschoolers enjoyed humming the theme song for the rest of the day!

Next week, the preschoolers will continue to inquire into our How We Express Ourselves unit.

Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

All Living Things Change

“Today you are you, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
- Dr Seuss

With great excitement and a bagful of jitters, the preschoolers presented their assembly to the school community on their How The World Works unit.

They practiced their lines, rehearsed all the actions and weaved their personalities into our performance. They were proud to share what they have learned about how all living things change, with the school community.

Even the Secret Magic Door left a note saying good luck to the preschoolers for their assembly presentation!

Thanks to our wonderful parents, the preschoolers got to enjoy some delicious and yummy snacks to celebrate all their hard work and effort that went into their assembly!

It was so lovely having the Kindergarten 2 students visit our class. They asked the preschoolers to take part in their data collection project. Of course, the preschoolers were happy to help their friends!

As part of our How We Express Ourselves unit, the preschoolers used their imagination to create a story, which they turned into a picture story book! They began by plotting their ideas into a mind map, focussing on the beginning, middle and ending of their story. They were careful to create interesting characters and a suitable story setting. From there they began writing their story. They took their time to refine their ideas and make the necessary changes to make their story come to life. With that, they then wrote the final copy of their story. The final piece of the puzzle was to design the cover for their book and to draw the illustrations for their written text.

The parents were so happy to read the preschoolers' special stories! The preschoolers were so proud to show off their written works. How wonderful it is to see their vivid imaginations and ideas come to life in words and in pictures!

Next week, the preschoolers will continue to reflect on what we have learned during our How The World Works unit of inquiry.

Thank you for your wonderful support this week, Busy Bee families!

Have a wonderful weekend!
